Place of assembly

A Place of Assembly licence is required to use or lease a place where the public congregates for special events. This is to protect the health and safety of patrons and applies to mass gatherings only (1000 people present for at least 2 hours).

Details of event

Food permit

Food prepared or sold from markets or events must comply with food safety laws. There are certain minimum requirements that need to be met. More information can be found here - Guidelines for Mobile Food Businesses

It is the responsibility of the event organiser to ensure that all food vendors have a valid food business registration. For an event, this can be either an Annual Mobile Food Registration or a Temporary Food Registration. Event organisers and vendors can apply for a food business registration with Huon Valley Council by completing and submitting the below application form at least two (2) weeks prior to the event.

Liquor licence

A Liquor License is required if the sale of liquor is intended as part of your event.

Any service of liquor in a Huon Valley Council owned/managed venue requires landowner permission by Huon Valley Council in writing. Further information can be provided by contacting events@huonvalley.tas.org.au

Temporary Occupancy Permit

A temporary structure includes but is not limited to gazebos, hoeckers, marquees, stages, gantries and tiered seating. To determine whether or not your event structures require a Temporary Occupancy Permit visit the State Government's Consumer, Building and Occupational Services.

For a more detailed copy of your obligations please see the Director of Building Control Determination.

If your structure/s require a Temporary Occupancy Permit (TOP) you will need to engage a building surveyor under the Building Act 2016 to obtain any applicable permits and retain a copy of for your own records. NOTE: The licensing of a jumping castle and amusement rides are managed through Work Safe Tasmania.

Additional permits

If your event impacts the use of State Roads you will need to apply to The Department of State Growth (DSG) for a permit. Details can be found via this link: Permits and bookings – Transport Services

Depending on the type of roads closure or location, additional approvals or permits may be required from Tasmanian Police. Details can be found via the link: Permits for Events - Tasmania Police
